The etiology of this disease varies and is explained by several risk factors that decrease iron intake and absorption or increase demand and loss, with multiple etiologies often coexisting in an individual patient. Although symptoms may be nonspecific, there is emerging evidence of the deleterious impact of iron deficiency anemia on clinical outcomes in a wide range of conditions, including psychiatric disorders and cognitive impairment. Increased awareness of the consequences and prevalence of iron deficiency anemia may facilitate earlier detection and treatment. Materials and methods: during the work we used data of scientific materials on the topic of iron deficiency anemia of leading domestic and foreign specialists in this field of psychiatry, as well as Russian- and English-language articles available in the databases: ELibrary.ru, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Europe PMC. The materials were searched using the keywords: GAD, iron deficiency anemia, iron metabolism. Inclusion criteria: full-text articles in Russian and English; original studies; clinical observations; monographs; guidelines. A total of 9 publications were found. Results: a literature review was conducted. Conclusions: iron plays a significant role in the functioning of neurotransmitter systems and basal ganglia; deficiency of this element is registered in a number of psychiatric and neurological disorders.
<kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Iron deficiency anemia</kwd><kwd>mental disorders</kwd><kwd>depression</kwd><kwd>cognitive function</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>железодефицитная анемия</kwd><kwd>психические расстройства</kwd><kwd>депрессия</kwd><kwd>когнитивные функции</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front>

<back><ref-list><ref id="B1">1.<mixed-citation>Elstrott B, Khan L, Olson S, Raghunathan V, DeLoughery T, Shatzel JJ.
