The relevance of the article lies in the significance of his achievements in the development of medicine in the USSR. The biography, information about education, participation in the First World War and medical activity during the Great Patriotic War are considered. The scientific works and monographs of Alexander Nikolaevich Bakulev are listed, with the help of which many doctors of the USSR became able to perform radical operations not only on the heart and blood vessels, but also on the lungs, spine, brain and spinal cord. During his medical career, the outstanding surgeon performed many completely new and daring operations. The treatment methods developed by A.N. Bakulev were successfully introduced into medical practice, and a huge number of people got a chance to recover. There is not a single area of modern cardiac surgery where Alexander Nikolaevich Bakulev or his students would not have left their contribution. He laid the strongest foundation for its development in the future. The research methods are empirical.
