The article includes information found in printed sources about his origin, studies at prestigious gymnasiums and universities in Hungary and Austria, scientific, medical and teaching activities. He was repeatedly the first in history to perform specific surgical interventions noted in the professional literature: he was the first in Hungary to perform a successful ovariotomy and the second to perform a cesarean section. The maternity department headed by him in 1855 can be considered the predecessor of today's department of obstetrics and gynecology. A man of indomitable will and faith in his work, who saved a huge number of lives, I.F. Semmelweis rightfully received the well-deserved nickname "Savior of Mothers". Having gone through difficulties and misunderstanding of the world scientific community, Semmelweis was able to prove the need to use disinfectants in medicine. During his long life Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis became a real personification of medicine and left behind a huge legacy in the form of his works, which he wrote throughout his life.
