Is that right? PURPOSE The objective is to warn patients against excessive use of vasoconstrictive nose drops and to prove that it really causes addiction; to describe side effects and subsequent effects. METHODS Scientific literature analysis. RESULTS Vasoconstrictor drops are absolutely not safe. Being similar to adrenaline, de-congestants in one way or another are able to be absorbed into the bloodstream and have a systemic effect: to increase blood and intraocular pressure, and they cause severe toxic reactions in children especially at early age. Extreme caution when using these drugs should be observed by people with hypertension, glaucoma and increased thyroid function [1]. Concentrations of drugs should be used in accordance with the age of the patient (most of them are presented in two or three concentrations - "adult" and "child"). Important information for patients. When using vasoconstrictor drops and sprays, you must follow the instructions, do not exceed the dosage and recommended frequency of administration. Even short-acting drugs cannot be used more than four times a day because it can cause an addiction. If possible, you need to use sprays, not drops. They allow you to get the desired effect using a smaller dose of the drug. In addition, sprays exclude the possibility of accidental overdose of the drug. It should be remembered that the multiplicity of the use of most decongestants is from 2 to 4 times a day. Long-term, more than 5-7 days, the use of local vasoconstrictors carries the risk of tachyphylaxis (addiction), when the effectiveness of the drug is reduced, and the need for its use increases and becomes constant [2]. In this regard, the duration of application of vasoconstrictor drops should be the minimum necessary. If a longer treatment is required, most doctors recommend changing the drug after 5-7 days, and the new drug should differ from the old one not in the manufacturer and not in the form of production, but in the international nonproprietary name (Xylometazoline, Oxymetazoline, phenylephrine, tuaminoheptan, etc.). If a person depends on vasoconstrictor drops, this addiction must be fought. On their own, effort will make it quite difficult. A very impоrtant thing is to develop the habit not to use drops at the first sign of nasal congestion. Other methods will help to relieve breathing and it would be a mistake to forget about humidifying of air in the room [3]. It is necessary to consult an ENT doctor. Vasoconstrictor drops can be used for pregnant and lactating women only after consultation with a doctor. Many of the drugs in this group are contraindicated. CONCLUSION Vasoconstrictive drops are not safe. After it has been considered a lot of ways to get rid of nose drops addiction, it is worth noting that the patient may nееd tо bе adjusted fоr lоng term treatment. You can get rid of addiction with minimal damage to the body by a positive mental attitude, and compliance with the recommendations of а physician.[H Marshall.
