Starting with the colonial period, when midwives took care of childbirth, obstetrics gradually became more medicalized in the 19th century with the arrival of male doctors and the introduction of anesthesia. In the 20th century, childbirth moved to hospitals, accompanied by advancements in technology such as ultrasound and fetal monitoring. However, excessive medical intervention sparked a movement for natural childbirth, leading to a resurgence of the role of midwives.
